Program Descriptions

Emergency Assistance

Services include emergency food, inormation, referral and advocacy.  Help is also offered for issues regarding housing, utilities, benefits, etc.

Roarke Connection

Provides services for women with legal issues or leaving incarceration.  We offer case management, a weekly support group and help with basic needs to aid reintergration into the community  We also work with the courts to deter incarceration.

Medical Clinic

Clinic is held Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m. Medical services are provided for the unisured in cooperation with Seton Health.

Creative Arts

Members engage in creative activities by using diverse media such as clay, painting and printmaking.

Creative Writing

Encourages members in verbal/written expression with the assistance of scribes.

Digital Photography

Disigned to develop observation skills and use of the computer to enhance pictures.

Adult Literacy

Participants needing individual or small group instruction in math and reading skills benefit from this program.

Sewing and Weaving

Instructors assis members to learn the skils of sweing and weaving to create a project of their choice whileenjoying interacting with each other.

Food Assistance

For persons living in downtown and south Troy, once a month, emergency food for 3-4 days is provided to elderly, singles and famlies in need.  Efforts are made to provide nutritious foods.

In conjunction with the Region Food Bank, Extra Helping offers the opportunity to purchase food at a reduced cost.

History

Roarke Center was founded in 1997 by the Daughters of Charity.  It is named after Sr. Mary Basil Roarke, DC, a native of south Troy.  In 2008, Catholic Charities became the corporate sponsor.

Membership is open to all persons living in Rensselaer County and the surrounding area.  There is no fee.  Services areoffered regardless of creed, age, ethinicity, or sexual orientation.

Mission

Motivated by the Gospel mandate to love our neighbor and to care for our brothers and sisters, the Roarke Center aims to enhance the lives of the people of Rensselaer County.  Sponsored by Catholic Charities and inspired by a mission of service, the center offers its members crisis intervention and on-going direct service and engages in advocacy and collaborationwith other providers.

Value Statement

The services and activities of the Center are intended to imporove the quality of life for its members, enable them to build self-esteem, provide social suport, and assist them to acieve their full potential.  All is carried out in an atmosphere of dignity, respect, compassion, and hope.
